Economic Overview & Business Opportunities
The Philippine economy posted solid growth last year in 2015 generated by strong domestic demand, despite drag from net exports. Growth is projected to pick up with higher investment and consumption. Inflation is forecast to rise moderately as dry weather from El Niño presses upward on food prices and utility rates. Sustaining strong growth will require policy continuity supporting the development of infrastructure and human capital, improvements to the investment climate, and governance reform.
The Philippines offers a wide range of investment opportunities and it has become a popular destination of foreign firms looking to expand their business and setup their companies. Among the sectors that welcome foreign investments are BPO, mining, infrastructure, agriculture, bio-fuels and renewable energy and tourism development.

Economic Overview & Business Opportunities
Thailand is Southeast Asia’s second largest economy with a gross domestic product (GDP) of around USD 385 billion in 2013. With a free-market economy, the Kingdom has a strong domestic market and a growing middle class, with the private sector being the main engine of growth. The Thai economy is well integrated into the global marketplace, with exports accounting for over 70 per cent of the Kingdom’s GDP. Thailand also has a strong industrial sector (38.1 per cent of GDP) and a robust and growing services sector (25.7 per cent of GDP) centred on the tourism and financial services industries. Though traditionally an agrarian society and historically one of the world’s few net food exporters, the agricultural sector today accounts for approximately 8.3 per cent of the country’s GDP. Thailand continues to invest in new projects to maintain its growth.
Given the importance of exports to Thailand, it has been a leader in the region in terms of trade liberalisation and facilitation with the rest of the world, starting with its Asian neighbours. Thailand is a key player in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), enjoying a strategic location that provides easy access to a larger market of nearly 600 million people, which is expected to gain even more strength when the ASEAN vision of One Community materialises in 2015, making it a community of connectivity, a single market and production base. Furthermore, Thailand’s convenient access to China and India, as well as to other East Asian countries such as Japan and the Republic of Korea, takes this huge consumer market to even bigger proportions.
Government expenditure and buoyant tourism played important roles in driving moderately stronger growth in Thailand in the first half of 2016. Growth in gross domestic product for the year as a whole is expected to slightly exceed the forecast in March, and for 2017 is still seen picking up to 3.5%. Inflation has returned after 15 months of declining consumer prices but will likely be lower this year than earlier projected. Robust growth in tourism is, together with weak imports, generating a larger current account surplus than earlier projected.

The improvement in India’s economic fundamentals has accelerated in the year 2015 with the combined impact of strong government reforms, RBI’s inflation focus supported by benign global commodity prices.

Government of India has introduced key reforms to the FDI policy, to help attract foreign investments. To achieve this goal, some measures such as the introduction of the composite cap that does away with the distinction between FDI and Foreign Portfolio Investment (FPI) and liberalising FDI norms in 15 major sectors have been taken.
